Parking in Riga: Zones, Prices and Visitor Tips

For parking in Riga, you pay €1.00–€2.50 for the first hour in municipal zones A–D, while Old Town Zone R costs €5.00 for the first hour and €8.00 for each following hour. Your payment method and charging hours depend on the space you choose, so identify the operator before leaving your car.

Through RigaInfo.com, you have English-language information for discovering local services, accommodation and attractions. For a visit by car, choosing parking near your accommodation or on the edge of Vecrīga (Old Town) gives you a practical starting point for exploring on foot.

How Much Does Parking in Riga Cost by Zone?

A person rides a bicycle through a rainy city street as a pedestrian with an umbrella walks nearby, a scene captured for Rigainfo.com.

Your municipal parking fee follows one of six tariff zones managed by Rīgas satiksme: A, B, C, D, R and V. Private car parks have separate prices, even when they sit beside a municipal parking area.

Municipal Zones A–D: Locations, Tariffs and Charging Hours

For parking in Riga city centre and surrounding streets, use the zone marked at your exact space. You can search for your destination in the municipal parking map and display zone boundaries, tariffs and charging hours.

Your municipal rates are:

  • Zone A: €2.50 for the first hour, then €3.00 per hour; minimum payment €0.60.

  • Zone B: €2.00 for the first hour, then €2.50 per hour; minimum payment €0.50.

  • Zone C: €1.50 for the first hour, then €2.00 per hour; minimum payment €0.40.

  • Zone D: €1.00 for the first hour, then €1.50 per hour; minimum payment €0.30 and maximum daily charge €5.00.

You pay in these zones on weekdays from 08:00 to 20:00 and Saturdays from 09:00 to 17:00. Use the nearby sign to identify the zone, especially when parking near a boundary.

Old Town Zone R and Seasonal Vecāķi Zone V

For municipal street parking in Riga Old Town, Zone R has the highest hourly rates. You pay €5.00 for the first hour, then €8.00 for each subsequent hour, with a minimum payment of €1.30.

Your Zone R charging period runs daily from 06:00 to midnight. A Sunday visit therefore still involves payment during those hours unless it falls on a public holiday.

At the coastal destination of Vecāķi, Zone V costs €2.00 per day, which is also the minimum payment. Its paid season runs 1 May–30 September, daily from 08:00 to 20:00.

When Is Municipal Parking Free?

You have free municipal parking outside each zone’s charging hours and on public holidays. For zones A–D, that includes Sundays; Zone R keeps its daily charging schedule.

You can use municipal spaces free outside charging hours and on public holidays. These fee exemptions leave road signs and other parking restrictions in force, and private parking lots follow their own terms.

How Do Visitors Pay for Parking?

You can pay for municipal parking through a supported app, a parking meter or Mobilly SMS. Your payment must begin within five minutes of parking, so prepare your preferred method before arriving.

Starting and Stopping a Session in the Mobilly App

With the Mobilly app, you start a parking session for your vehicle and stop it when you leave. You can register using phone numbers from EU countries, the United Kingdom, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Ukraine.

Follow these steps:

  1. Download the app and register with your phone number.

  2. Add funds to your account using an available payment method.

  3. Open the car section and select the tariff zone.

  4. Enter your vehicle registration number and press START.

  5. Check that your session is active.

  6. Press STOP when you finish parking.

Your first account top-up has a minimum of €3.00. Check the selected zone’s description for transaction fees, which apply in some locations.

Using Parking Meters and Supported SMS Payments

At municipal parking meters, you select your zone and parking duration, then pay by bank card. Your receipt is electronic, with options to retrieve it through a QR code or email.

With the newer municipal payment system, you can pay for any zone at any payment machine. You still need to enter the zone where your car is parked.

SMS parking payment to short code 1859 works only with Latvian mobile operators (LMT, Tele2, Bite). If you use a foreign SIM card, SMS payments will not go through.

Visitors with foreign phone numbers should use the Mobilly app, which supports foreign number registration and card payments. You can also pay directly by bank card at municipal parking meters or use the EuroPark app for private lots.

Checking Your Number Plate, Zone and Payment Confirmation

Before walking away, match your payment details to the car and the sign beside it. For a rental car, use its current number plate, including every letter and digit.

Check the operator as well as the zone code. A private lot beside a Zone B street has its own parking terms, and a municipal session does not establish payment for that lot.

Keep your electronic receipt or app confirmation until your visit is complete. After a prepaid municipal period ends, you must leave the space within 15 minutes.

Where Should You Park for Your Visit?

A yellow van, as seen on rigainfo.com, is stacked on top of a teal and white bus, with a bicycle strapped to the roof of the van.

For an Old Town visit, a car park near the perimeter gives you a practical base for walking; for a city-centre stay, hotel parking deserves an early check. Match short-term parking to brief stops and long-term parking to overnight stays or flights.

Old Town: Limited Street Spaces vs. Nearby Car Parks

If you are staying in Vecrīga, establish your accommodation’s vehicle access and parking arrangements before driving into its narrow streets. Allow extra time for the final approach and any walk from your space.

Zone R street parking becomes costly over a longer visit. Nearby car parks give you another option, including Jēkaba Arkāde at Z. A. Meierovica bulvāris 8.

For sightseeing around Riga Cathedral and its famous organ, plan to cover the Old Town on foot after parking. If your accommodation is outside the centre, public transport also avoids the need to find a space close to the sights.

City Centre: Public Car Parks, Underground Garages and Hotel Parking

For parking in Riga city centre, compare the full duration of your stay across street spaces, surface parking lots and covered facilities. A daily tariff and an hourly rate serve different needs.

With underground parking, check the entrance height before entering, particularly if your car has a roof box. Read the exit instructions and establish whether pedestrian access remains available when you expect to return.

For hotel parking, ask whether the arrangement covers an on-site space or a separate facility. Establish the total charge and whether leaving and returning ends your parking period.

Finding Free Spaces Beyond the Centre

You have more opportunities to find free parking in Riga outside the central paid areas. Look for a lawful space and read the surrounding signs before leaving your vehicle.

Check for private-property conditions, resident restrictions and time limits. A space without a payment machine still needs a signs check.

Allow for the onward journey when choosing a more distant location. A free space works best when the walk or public transport connection fits your plans.

Riga Airport: Short-Term Visits and Multi-Day Stays

For airport collection or drop-off, P1 serves short visits close to the terminal. You receive the first 10 minutes free once every 24 hours if you exit within 10 minutes; parking up to 30 minutes costs €2.00, followed by €1.50 for each additional 30 minutes.

For several days away, Riga Airport parking includes long-term options with advance-reservation prices from €4.99 per 24 hours. The displayed price applies to the selected car park and dates.

Online reservations must be completed at least two hours before your planned arrival. All official car parks are within walking distance of the terminal with no shuttle bus needed: long-term lot P3 is a 3–5 minute walk, while P4 is about a 7–10 minute walk.

Which Parking Rules and Mistakes Should Visitors Know?

Your main safeguards are a lawful space and a valid payment for that exact location. Municipal parking payment, private-lot charges and road-traffic penalties involve different rules.

Reading Signs, Time Limits and Pedestrian-Zone Restrictions

Read the full sign arrangement before you park, including supplementary panels below the main sign. Check the permitted times and any vehicle restrictions.

In Old Town, follow access signs and pedestrian-zone restrictions on your approach. A hotel address or a nearby paid parking space does not establish permission to enter every street.

Staying in the driver’s seat does not remove the municipal payment requirement. You have a maximum of five minutes of free use during paid parking hours, including when you remain in the car with the engine running.

Disabled Parking and Permit Requirements

For disabled parking, use your permit in line with the location’s rules and display it clearly. In municipal parking, place it on the dashboard so its details, validity and number are visible.

If you hold a permit issued abroad, establish its acceptance and any payment exemption with the operator for your chosen facility. Keep private-lot conditions separate from municipal arrangements.

At Riga Airport P1, you have 30 minutes free in designated reduced-mobility spaces with a Latvian or international disabled parking permit. Present your entry ticket and permit at the Airport Visitor Centre in the E Arrivals Hall; this benefit is available once every 24 hours.

Overnight Parking, Private-Lot Terms and Hotel Arrangements

You can leave your car overnight where the signs and facility terms permit it. For municipal spaces, account for the next charging period, especially Zone R’s 06:00 start.

In a private lot, read how the operator calculates a day and handles re-entry. Keep any access ticket with you if you need it to return through a locked pedestrian entrance.

For a hotel-arranged space, establish the checkout deadline for the car. Your room checkout and parking entitlement need separate attention.

What to Do if You Receive a Parking Penalty

Start by identifying who issued the notice and what type of charge it describes. Photograph the notice and nearby signs, then retain your payment record.

For municipal parking without advance payment, the post-payment charge is €53.00 in Zone R and €10.00 in Zone D. Other zones have their own amounts.

You qualify for a 20% reduction if you pay within 10 days, accept the notice without requesting cancellation and have no wheel clamp applied. If you dispute it, provide the notice number, vehicle details, location and timing, plus your reason and supporting evidence.

For a private parking charge, follow that operator’s payment or complaint process. A road-traffic fine follows the issuing authority’s procedure.

Choose Your Space, Check the Zone and Confirm Payment

You will manage parking in Riga more easily by choosing a suitable facility before your final approach. For Old Town, weigh the high Zone R hourly price against nearby car parks and the walk to your destination.

With RigaInfo.com’s English-language local information, you can plan your accommodation and sightseeing around where you leave the car. Before walking away, match your number plate and zone to the payment confirmation, then note when charging resumes or your paid period ends.
