Riga Motor Museum the largest and most modern museum of old vehicles in Latvia and the Baltic States Museum have been delighting the eyes of visitors with their exposition since 1989. Both then and now, it is the only museum of this profile in Latvia and the largest in the Baltics.
However, the idea of a museum of old vehicles in Latvia was born already in the seventies of the 20th century, when a small group of enthusiasts - the Latvian Antique Automobile Club founded an unprecedented movement - gatherings and rallies of old vehicles. These events gathered not only owners of old vehicles but also thousands of spectators.
The foundation stone of the museum was laid on June 6, 1986, and the opening of the building took place on April 22, 1989. The museum building was opened by the Chairman of the State Plan Committee, Miervaldis Ramāns, and the Minister of Transport, Jānis Janovskis, while a representative of the Volkswagen Group took part in the opening.
The visit to the newly opened museum was impressive - 75 thousand people in 1989, and already 130 thousand in 1990. It proved that the enthusiast's dream had turned into a powerful energy that was also appreciated by the public.
After the ambitious reconstruction, the Riga Motor Museum, which opened in 2016, has changed beyond recognition. Using modern and interactive technologies, visitors are invited to go on a virtual true journey through the history of car construction, which began 133 years ago, when the first car was patented.
The exhibition halls of the museum are darkened, but the vehicles themselves are brightly lit. This allows you to focus on the most important thing - the museum's exhibits and their stories, which the visitor must discover for himself with the help of modern multimedia.
In addition to the permanent exposition, which is spread over 3 floors with an area of 4,000 square meters, there are thematic exhibitions, motor vehicle presentations, research work on the history of automobile construction, and motor vehicles are restored in the museum's workshops.
